Will Breastfeeding Affect My Sex Life?

If you’ve just had a baby, sex is probably one of the last things on your mind.

Motherhood can be exhausting, whether you’re breastfeeding or not, but maybe you’re wondering if breastfeeding is to blame for your non-existent libido.

Well, technically, breastfeeding can affect your sex drive, as your body produces more prolactin (the hormone which enables milk production), and prolactin has been found to hinder your sex drive. It can also make you feel a little less lubricated down there, due to lower levels of estrogen in your body – try not to worry though, as this is nothing a water-based lubricant can’t solve.

You may also find that you don’t find your breasts as sexual as you did before, this may mean you don’t like them to be touched in the same way. This is completely normal.

As a new mum you’re likely to be tired, spending your days covered in sick, struggling to find time to get a shower and binge-eating whatever you can get your hands on – so don’t worry if you aren’t eager to resume your sex-life, wait until you are ready! If your partner is struggling with this, just explain that your body has been through the biggest challenge of your life and you need time to recover.

Well, there’s no guarantee that you can prevent it. However, if you make sure your breasts are relatively empty, by feeding or pumping prior to sex, this may help prevent a leak. You may also want to just wear some nice lingerie and keep a bra on lined with a breast pad.
